There’s no such thing as a free lunch

There’s no such thing as a free lunch(天下沒白吃的午餐)

林瀚福跟他的好兄弟阿里約在一家餐廳吃晚飯,看到阿里一臉疲態,他就發難了…….

Lin: 好久不見,好哥們 !

A-LI: 是啊,好久不見。

Lin: 最近過得怎麼樣?

A-LI: 還好,我最近多管閒事,幫倒忙。

Lin:

Lin Han-fu has dinner with his buddy, A-Li, at a restaurant. Seeing his pal so exhausted, he raises some questions…….

Lin: Long time no see, man!

A-Li: Yeah, it’s been a long time since we last met

Lin: How have you been?

A-  Li: I have been doing okay, but I poked my nose into others’ business. It was a big failure.

Lin: What happened?

A-   Li: A friend of mine bought me a big meal and asked me to help him pursue a girl. I did, but that girl didn’t like my friend and turn against me.

Lin: Hahahaa….There is an old saying: there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Questionnaire

Questionnaire

Living in a fast-paced world, people suffer from depression once in a while. We have to deal with different kinds of things or people. Some are easily handled, but others are not. How do we find a balanced way in life?

Do you change your lifestyle to make yourselves healthier? Here are some questions you can think of:

1.      How long have you surfed online on a daily basis?

2.    How often do you exercise per week?

3.    Do you have a close friend you can talk to when facing difficulties?

4.    Do you watch Facebook posts more often than you do other things?

5.     How often do you clean your car or room?

6.    How dirty is your toilet or trash can?

7.     Do you eat slowly?

8.    How long have you NOT gone out for a vacation?

9.    Do you feel annoyed being nagged by your parents?

10.    Do you read books in bed?

11.  Do you sit in a proper position?

Dear friends,

We all have problems to deal with in life. No one is perfect, so you don’t rely on others too much. A Buddhism guru once said,” Face it, accept it, deal with it and let go of it.”  when facing difficulties.

Confidant

            Confidant(姊妹淘)

More and more people suffer from minor depression in life. One in five girls has a fit of depression in life. Depression is more prevalent in girls than in boys. How so? Girls have to experience periods once a month, and endure the pain of giving birth. Besides, girls are easily controlled by hormone fluctuation. Most girls are softies while most boys have a hardihood nature.

So how do we fix the bad mood in life? We talk to our confidants. There is always sisterhood among girls and ”bromance” among boys. They are the vents of our frustration, anger and sadness. The only answer to a question is to speak up. Let outsider to help us and encourage us to move on. Talking to confidants is a way to let go of depression and find a way to solve the problems. We are not a frog that looks at the moon and no idea how big the world is.

Play Hardball

               Play Hardball(來硬的)

I always believed in being gentle with people, and was afraid of fighting and argument. I chose to give in every time there was a different opinion against me. I did not not care  the right thing I should fight for myself, neither did I care this was an act of cowardice. Because I was raised being obedient, and being taught to be silent. However, there was something happened and I realized people should stand up for themselves.

One of my insurance agents is a female in her fifties. She always put my demand aside and take her time. “ This agent didn’t come here and take care of it,” I called  the insurance company a year ago, “ I want to talk to your supervisor.” “ All the staff are having a morning meeting, and I will tell our supervisor about your complaint,” said the operator. The operator promised to report the complaint to their supervisor, and I accepted it. The agent came late that day and talked to me with bad manners. I ignored her bad manners and got the work done.

This time, I applied for another service. All the same the agent went her own way and told me to prepare something to complete the paperwork. “ I went to the company and the ladies took care of it. I don’t know why you still want me to go through the same procedure again?” I said. “ I guess you are busy, and I will go to one of my clients first,” the agent said. “ If you takes an ignoring attitude towards the service, I will report it to your company now,” I responded on Line. Unexpectedly, she came to handle paperwork immediately and talked to me with smile and a very nice manners.

This event made me understand that you play hardball with unfriendly people is a right thing to do. No shouting, anger spurting out. Just a few words can get this done. As long as you take advantage of others’ fault or mistakes, you can get them down.

Domestic Helper

                      Domestic Helper(外傭)

Seeing the march event held by migrant workers in the newspaper yesterday, I recalled the foreign workers I trained in the high-tech industry. They are from the Philippines, and most of them have a bachelor degree. They are luckier and tougher in comparison with those Indonesians abused by their employers. Indonesians are soft-spoken and easily intimidated while Filipinos are smart and fight for their own rights. In addition, their English abilities are better than Indonesians’ as well as some Taiwanese’s. Some of them are not easily tamed, and you have to figure out how to deal with them. The management was a challenge to the high-ranking supervisors. Back then, I had to help and interpret what the manager said to the foreign workers. I wouldn’t say people never made mistakes, and once you did you paid for it. That’s how people manage and run a company.

Being a teenager, I believed in the basic goodness of people. However, I now realized there is also basic badness of people after experiencing and handling many things in real world. We are not Peter Pan, and we will get wiser over time. People should get stronger and put on another mask while working. This is what I learn from my bitter experience. “ I used to act like you, but I change myself and defend myself with wisdom and tactics,” said a then-supervisor in a workplace. I appreciated the advice she gave, and she did quite well there. I can help chuckling about how innocent I was before.

Dear friends,

Life is just like a journey, and you will see many different people and encounter many things along the way. Laugh yourself out of those silly and intriguing things, but remember to move on and encourage yourself and stand up for yourself.

Otaku

                                      Otaku(宅男)

A few days ago, one of my male friends texted me by Line.“ I will leave here,” said my friend, “ Let’s meet before I leave here.” “Okay, let’s meet for dinner,” I responded. We had dinner together and took a walk on the street. He told me a lot his secrets and worries. Afterwards, he unskillfully drove me home. We said “goodbye” to each other.

After 3 years of hard-working, he earned what he wished for. But I found he is still incapable of talking to girls and always liked to talk about his own stuff. He was a 100% homebody; 3 C products are his favorite. He talked and checked on his cell phone at the same time. Rarely did he raise his head to look in your eyes while chatting with you. I felt disappointed after hanging out with him. There is an old saying: “A leopard doesn't/can't change its spots.” Time didn’t improve and mature his character.

Those who complained others never introspected themselves. Those seldom got favor from girls always say girls are too picky and realistic. But a man with maturity will not say a lot of excuses and put all the blame on others. I felt sorry for him because he still didn’t understand why girls said “no” to him even though he declared his accomplishment.
