The eateries1 attempted to hook2 customers on their noodles with poppy power, which can be purchased easily in markets in western China3.

Ethnicity Not an Important Factor

In both1 the 2012 and this year's presidential and legislative elections, the Democratic Progressive Party(DPP) tried to gain more votes from Hakka communities, which2 are often considered Chinese Nationalist Party(KMT) strongholds. However3, taking a closer look into election outcomes in the communities shows that ethnicity might not be such4 an important factor.

與and連用。

: The prospects both excited and worried me.

  此外還可當代名詞:Why not buy both?

We like Amy and Phil both.

New York is trying hard to wipe out slum areas; However, the slums keep growing faster.

such/what +a/an +adj.

It is such a good day that we should go out for a walk.

Former Hsinchu county commissioners Fan Chen-tsun g(范振宗), who served two terms from 1989 to 1997, and Lin Kuang-hus(林光華), who served from 1997 to 2001, were both5 DPP members.

We like Amy and Phil both.

Fan and Lin were elected not because6 voters in Hsinchu wanted a rotation of power, not because the Fan family is one of the larger ones in control of local politics in Hsinchu. Thus the two were elected with the help of the clans.

not because……….but because」不是因為………

Mike was absent from school not because he was lazy, but because he was sick.

An Act of Kindness

An Act of kindness(出自好心)

Jane is a mum of a five-year-old. She went to the McDonald’s to buy a meal for her son, and saw an unshaven man eating from the ketchup dispenser. She thought he is a homeless guy, so she bought him a meal from an act of kindness. But later a clerk put a meal at the table to the paying customer.

Jane: I was mortified today.

Co-worker: What happened?

Jane: I thought I was doing a good deed for a homeless man in McDonald’s. And It soon turned to a feeling of total embarrassment when a staff member also brought over a tray of food - that the man had just paid for.

Co-worker: Hahahahaha, really!!

Jane: I didn’t stick around to see if he ate the food I bought him too, I just ran out of the shop as quickly as I could.

10 years in Hong Kong

I often tell overseas friends that Hong Kong is like a diva who1 gets a makeover every few years. In the past decade alone2, the city has gone through several rounds of transformation that rendered3 postcards and guidebooks instantly obsolete each time.   (取自As I see it 部落格文章)

¼a diva who1 gets a makeover every few years.

In the past decade alone2, the city has gone through¼

(In the past decade)

¼transformation that rendered3 postcards and guidebooks instantly obsolete each time.

render =make=cause 使得/造成

: Rainy days always make me sad.

Don’t make the problem worse than it is.

Render ¼ instantly obsolete each time.

           Ca. v.                             adj.

makeover  n.

make over  phr.

Henry has made over the whole business to his son.

You can't make over a personality in one day.

go through 通過; 經歷

As soon as my divorce goes through, we'll get married.

II.        討論   Let's go through the argument again.

III. They went through the marriage service.
